Walking Tour of the Raleigh Estate

The Raleigh Estate is located in the middle of some of South Devon's finest countryside.

It's a wonderful landscape of rolling hills, wooded valleys and mysterious green lanes all set against the beautiful River Dart.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Estate and its history whilst enjoying a relaxing walk then why not join us a guided walking tour.

We have devised a circular walk starting and finishing in the beautiful riverside village of Dittisham.  This walk takes in sections of the Dart Valley Trail as it winds through the present-day Raleigh Estate.

Your Guide, a direct descendent of Sir Walter Raleigh, will highlight the Raleigh family’s historical connections with the area as we enjoy some wonderful South Devon countryside.

The Walk

Raleigh Estate Guided Walking Tour

Distance - The total walk is approx 5½ miles and should take a maximum of 3 hours

Terrain - Includes village paths, roads, fields and footpaths.  The walk takes in the village of Dittisham, riverside paths, open fields and forestry.  Several stiles need to be negotiated.  There’s potential for mud depending on the season/weather.

Grade - moderate.  There's no getting away from the fact that Devon is hilly!  This walk features a couple of long steady climbs (from river level up to approx 150m) plus one fairly steep descent.  We're not talking mountains but it's enough to get the blood circulating.  We'll go at your pace so there will be plenty of opportunities for breaks to take in the views.

Restrictions - Unfortunately, due to the nature of the terrain, this walk is not suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs or mobility scooters.  We also wouldn’t recommend this walk for very small children as you'll probably end up carrying them and that's not going to do your back any good!

Dogs - It's ok to bring well-behaved dogs but please note they they may need to be put on leads at certain points, particularly if livestock are present.

Start & Finish - The Ham car park in Dittisham (see directions below)
