Forestry

The Raleigh Estate has some 250 acres of woodland.  Much of this grows on the steeper slopes of the estate bordering Old Mill Creek and in the valleys leading down to the river.

The woodland on the estate is a mixture of broad-leaved trees such as oak, ash, beech, elm, hazel, and softwood plantations of larch, douglas fir, norwegian spruce

The softwood plantations are grown commercially with regular thinnings and clear-felling.  The hardwood plantations are left in a natural site with some coppicing.  Wind-blown trees are generally cleared and used for firewood.

The woodland on the estate provides an important natural environment for all manner of flora and fauna.  Much of the estate is actually within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and some sites are listed as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
